Former Espanyol boss Luis Garcia Fernandez has been appointed as Qatar’s new national team manager.

The Qatar Football Association has confirmed the appointment of Luis Garcia Fernandez as the new head coach, following the sacking of Bartolomé Marquez Lopez, or Tintin Marquez, as reported by Marca on Wednesday.
Garcia, who had been assisting Spaniard Tintin Marquez since December 2023, replaced him at the helm.
Garcia’s appointment is a significant step up in the Spaniar’s career, after having coached Spanish clubs Damm, Espanyol, and Internacional FC.
Garcia expressed his gratitude to QFA and Marquez for the opportunity to lead the team.
Tintin Marquez took over as Qatar national team coach from Carlos Queiroz in December last year, but their performance in the second round of the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers was not good, collecting only 7 points from the first 6 matches, before the Qatar Football Association sacked the 62-year-old coach and appointed Luis Garcia, 43, as the new coach.
Luis Garcia previously Promotion ufabet worked as Espanyol’s manager from April to November 2023. And also served as Tintin Marquez’s assistant during the 2023 Asian Cup. The 43-year-old will take charge of the team for the first time against the United Arab Emirates in the Gulf Cup group stage on December 21.
Qatar will then play hosts Oman and Kuwait on December 24 and 27 respectively.
